Work complete on new £3m market in Brighouse
Traders set to welcome customers to new permanent home after keys handed over
Hello and welcome to The Calderdale Lead!
I hope you’re all having a good weekend and that the fireworks that were lighting up the sky last night didn’t scare your pets too much.
Looking at some of the pictures across social media, it looks like a few of the organised bonfires and fireworks displays really took things up a notch this year!
It was also good to see so many people - young and old(er) - dressing up for Halloween on Friday!
In today’s edition, we’ve got details of the new £3m market in Brighouse which is ready for occupation. I’ve not had a chance to visit the site yet but the pictures look absolutely stunning.
Plus, the usual Calderdale Digest. So, on with the news…
Calderdale Digest
🚨 Halifax MP Kate Dearden - recently promoted to a junior ministerial position by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer - made her debut appearance in that role in the Commons this week.
Ms Dearden answered questions on behalf of the Department for Trade and Business during ministerial questions.
And she said: “I couldn’t be prouder to answer questions on behalf of our Government. I’m so grateful to my constituents for their ongoing support - it was an honour to champion local businesses, including our brilliant hospitality sector, and the communities they help make so vibrant.”
⚽Halifax Town’s FA Cup adventures came to an end yesterday with a 2-0 home defeat to Exeter City.
Goals at the start and end of the first half were enough to hand the League One side the victory and a place in the second round.
Danny Andrew opened the scoring after just two minutes before Jayden Wareham added a second in the fourth minute of added time before the break.
Despite the result, boss Adam Lakeland said he was proud of how his players reacted.
He told the Halifax Courier post-match: “Credit to the players, I’m so proud of how they played, and I’m so proud of the efforts, as usual, because even in that second-half, we said ‘we have come from behind here, kicking towards the South Stand’, and if we could’ve scored the next goal, it could change.”
Here’s the best of the action:
Traders set to welcome customers at new £3m market in Brighouse

By Andrew Greaves
The new £3m market at Brighouse is set to open after the keys were handed over to Calderdale Council.
The new market includes 21 fixed stalls, each equipped with water, drainage and power. There are welcoming seating areas for people to rest, meet others, or just stop for a moment and enjoy, and there is space for a further 19 pop-up stalls, providing opportunities for pop-ups and events.
New decorative gates, cycle parking and accessible entrances create a better connection to the town centre, through Bethel Street Car Park, Briggate and Thornton Square.
Market traders, temporarily trading from Daisy Street Car Park, are preparing to move to the new market building. They will be joined by new stallholders, attracted by the opportunity to trade from the upgraded new home for Brighouse open market.
West Yorkshire-based Triton Construction has led on construction on behalf of Calderdale Council and the Brighouse Town Deal Board.
The new market is a key part of the Brighouse Town Deal, which is investing £19.1 million from the UK Government on projects that build on the town’s strengths and are shaped by local people following significant consultation and engagement.
Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “We want Calderdale’s towns and places to thrive, and this milestone for Brighouse is a key part of the aspiration to build a town where history lives, communities come together, memories are made and the economy can grow.”
Cllr Silvia Dacre, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, added: “The market completion has been eagerly awaited by the community. When I visited earlier this week a resident asked me when the new market was going to open, it was great to be able to tell him that it would be in the next few weeks.
“We’re really impressed with the new facilities, which will be yet another reason for people to visit and do business in Brighouse.”
The market revitalisation is one of the Brighouse Town Deal projects which will deliver:
A more attractive, safer and cleaner town centre so those who shop, visit and enjoy spend longer, spend more and return often.
A better, warmer welcome for those arriving in the town by any means, and improved links between the town centre and green spaces to provide access to nature and encourage health and wellbeing improvements by making walking and cycling more attractive.
A brand new market housing the traders of today and the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
A place to come together providing a community space at the heart of the town in the historic Thornton Square.
A focus on the future with investment in apprenticeships, skills and training building on the town’s manufacturing heritage and work to encourage trade and investment.
